Inspiration & References

Before I get into this tutorial, I did want to mention some background information about this text effect.

This was basically a random effect I came up with while making that 2024 Shellshock cover art which reminded me of the VFX artist and producer modus. I thought it looked super cool, so I decided to make a tutorial for it! Plus, a fellow friend SumaQosh mentioned it being a "modus sort of thing" when I sent it to his server, and I can definitely agree that it looks like modus's art.

Disclaimer

There are some things I did that I forgot to provide screenshots of, so bear with me here as I try to provide those steps.

To an empty transparent layer, add some text.
Select all of the pixels of the shape. Add a linear gradient in any direction from black to white.
1. To do this a lot quicker, select the background with a tolerance of 0%, then invert the selection.
2. You need to do black and white because the Psychocolor effect in the next step works better with grayscale images but feel free to experiment.
Apply the Psychocolor color effect and set the phase shift to anything.
Different values yield different gradient patterns.
Apply the Color Aberration color effect and shift each channel in any direction.

Apply the median blur effect while only changing the highlighted parameter.
Add some effects and adjustments to your liking until you end up with an interesting result.
Apply the Gaussian Blur effect with a radius of 1.
Apply the AA's Assistant object effect with a sharpness of 3, and make sure Soften the edges is enabled.
Apply the median blur effect at a relatively low radius at the highest quality [9].
The effects and adjustments used are in the history pane at the top right.
Duplicate the current layer. Set the blend mode to Glow.
Apply the Frosted Glass distortion effect while experimenting with the highlighted parameters.
The reason why you must keep the minimum scatter radius to 0 is because that's the "start" of the scattering effect this applies.
